We are Nyanza

Nyanza Lodge 1197, based in Ilminster, Somerset, was founded in 1867 as one of the world’s oldest friendship societies. We are ordinary men from all walks of life, occupation is of no relevance. We value each other for who we are, not what we do. Our members come from local towns as well as places like London, Dorset, and Devon.

If you're interested in learning about Freemasonry or joining, this is the place for you.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a long-established society of men who value friendship, truth, and honour. It encourages members to visit Lodges throughout the UK and worldwide, where they are always welcome. As a charitable organisation, Freemasonry supports causes such as hospices, air ambulances, and disaster relief efforts. Members join for various reasons, including broadening their network, help deserving causes, or simply enjoying a social activity.

How can I learn more?

If you're interested in learning about Freemasonry or considering joining the Ilminster Freemasons, we'd be happy to meet you for an informal chat with one of our members. There’s no pressure to join; you must ask to become a member. We recommend reading genuine Masonic resources and speaking with real Masons. To join, you must believe in a Supreme Being, but Freemasonry is not a religion. It is open to men of all races, religions, and social standings, and applicants must be at least 21 years old and free of criminal convictions.

How do I join?
Become a freemason

To become a Freemason, you first need to enquire and discuss the process with senior Lodge members to ensure it's a good fit. If you decide to proceed, your request will be put to a vote by Lodge members.

If approved, you’ll be informed and an initiation date will be arranged. To get started, simply go to the contact page, provide your details, and we will arrange a meeting at a convenient time.
